I ask my children to choose their favorite meal for their birthday dinner. Caleb’s is biscuits and sausage gravy. I love this because it is so easy!
BISCUITS:
3 c. self rising flour
1/2 t. baking powder
2 c. heavy whipping cream
That’s it! Mix the dry ingredients and make a well in the middle. Slowly pour in the cream (I also add a little milk to the cream to lighten the dough). After the dry ingredients are incorporated turn the dough out on a floured board and knead a little. Roll the dough out and cut with a biscuit cutter or you can use the rim of a class. Brush with melted butter and bake at 450 until golden brown! Mmmm I think I will make some right now!
SAUSAGE GRAVY:
1 lb. of ground sausage (I use regular but you can use spicy too)
about 1/4 c. flour
milk (not sure how much milk, just enough to make soupy, maybe 3 or 4 cups)
Brown the sausage in an iron skillet. Leave the grease in and add enough flour to make a paste. Once the paste has browned a little, add enough milk to make it the consistency that you want. Add a little salt and pepper and call it done!!!
This is a quick and easy recipe. It is delicious and easy in the budget too!
I made homemade biscuits and Cunecuh Sausage from Alabama. Pass me some of that gravy. Yum!
Tonya, to make my gravy a bit healthier I fry my sausage, about a pound and half and drain the grease off. If I really want to be healthy I rinse it with hot water but that is pushing it. I always use Blue and Gold. Return the sausage to a deep pan and open 2 cans of evaporated milk and pour that in. Add water to both cans and pour half from each can into the pan with sausage and milk. Then I add 4 Tbl. flour to each can the water and wisk it really good and remove the lumps. Thicken up and salt and pepper. When I added the flour to the sausage and grease it would always glob up and not mix in well. We like more gravy than sausage. It really turns out good and I sure feel better when I eat it knowing all the grease is gone….Debbie
