I heard about this crazy idea, making homemade ice-cream in a ziplock bag, the other day from my mother. I have to say the first thing that came to my mind was, this will never work! I thought, it will probably be hard, take forever to make and then be runny when I’m done. I’m not even gonna waste my time, I thought. But, my mother who likes to try new recipes, assured me that it would, in fact, work and taste wonderful!

Well, she was right! Caleb and I tried it last week and it worked perfectly, and tasted devine! There are many versions of the recipe out there in the google world, some better than others. I came up with one I like, and tried it out on a group of about 20 people. It got rave reviews! Later that week, I made some for Devin. I waited with baited breath, hoping that Mr. Picky…I mean Mr. wonderful…would approve. After his first bite, with raised eyebrows and a thumbs up, said, “oh yeah! Now that’s good stuff!”

Here’s the recipe I used.

1 3/4 cup half and half
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla
Ice cream salt
Ice cubes
1 gallon size zipper style bag
1 quart size zipper style bag

In a small bowl mix the half and half, cream, sugar and vanilla. After it is mixed well, pour this mixture in a quart size bag. Make sure all of the air is out of the bag before you zip it closed. At this point you may want to put this bag into another quart bag just to insure that it doesn’t leak.

Fill the gallon bag, half way, with cubed ice then add about 1/4 cup ice cream salt.

Now place the quart bag of ice cream mixture inside the gallon bag full of ice.

Here comes the fun part! Wrap a small towel around the bag (to keep your hands from freezing off!)and start shaking! Shake the bag back and forth, up and down, and all around. Heck, you can even dance around the room with it! Shake it for about ten minutes or so, check to see if it’s getting firm. When it’s firm enough to eat, it’s done! It’s that simple!
So, the next time you feel like a bowl of ice cream, give this a try and let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading! I love you more than Coke and peanuts!
